Individually, our core team members have been iterating and refining the practice of online, blended, and personalized learning since its inception, bringing over 100 years of collective experience to this relatively new and evolving practice.  Now that we have joined together at iLC, we look forward to scaling the impact of our work nationally and internationally to promote equity and access in education.

At its heart, however, iLC is first and foremost a collaborative.  The success of our work is built on a foundation of committed members, partners, and practitioners, who devote their time and energies towards advancing the practice of student-centered learning.  We welcome the involvement of all who share our passions.

Our Team

 

Judy Perez, Chief Executive Officer, Founder
Judy has been identified as a national level expert in K-12 online and blended learning by the U.S. Department of Education. She has over 25 years of experience in education with 14 years in online and blended learning. Prior to founding the iLearn Collaborative, she directed district-level blended learning at Jeffco Public Schools, the largest school district in Colorado, and led their online school from turnaround status to Performance accreditation. Judy's career in education includes science teacher, assistant principal, principal, district leader and CAO for the Charter School Institute at the Colorado Dept. of Education. Judy was one of the earliest educators to begin the exploration of how to leverage technology in the classroom, and was a leader for one of the first online schools in Colorado well over a decade ago. She is also the parent of two blended learners.

John Canuel, Director of Strategic Planning Services
John brings over 35 years of experience K-12 leadership, teaching and learning. He currently consults with various companies, organizations and schools in strategic planning and leadership models to maximize time and resources and focus on student learning. Prior to this work, John served as VP of K-12 Strategy with Blackboard and held various positions with Jeffco Public Schools, including classroom teacher, staff developer, curriculum director, technology/library director. As Jeffco’s Executive Director for Educational Technology Services, John successfully implemented nationally recognized technology integration models and online learning programs.

Jill Pellegrini, Director of Professional Development
After a brief stint in marketing and sales, Jill followed her heart and has spent the last 20 years as an educator. In addition to her experience in a traditional school setting, Jill has eight years of experience teaching both online and blended classes in English and Humanities. Besides developing courses, she also mentors teachers new to the field of blended learning. Her talent and dedication were recognized when she was granted the 2015-16 Colorado Department of Education Blended and Online Teacher Recognition Award.

Lynée Zajac Beck, OER Program Manager, Course Developer & Designer
Lynée has been in education for over 18 years teaching in brick and mortar, online, and blended classrooms. Lynée specializes in creative, effective and efficient approaches to learning and training. Her experience includes eLearning design and development as well as expertise in various learning management systems. She is licensed in Secondary Science and Mathematics in Colorado and Washington State and holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Colorado.

Rosemary Sweat, Course Developer & Designer
Rosemary has over 20 years of experience in the field of education. She is endorsed in both Secondary Social Studies and English, and has taught middle school and high school in brick and mortar, online, and blended settings. She also has experience in the expeditionary and project-based learning classrooms. In her various roles, Rosemary consistently incorporated project-based, experiential, and hands-on field work in her content areas. She has overseen myriad educational expos and community events, encouraging award winning student projects.

Heather Hiebsch
Heather Hiebsch helps iLearn Collaborative stay on the cutting edge of blended and personalized learning, offering 20 years of experience in K-12 education and innovation. She is currently Executive Director of TabLab, a non-profit that provides tablet technology and teacher trainers to transform the world’s rural schools. Prior to this, she was the founding principal of the PSD Global Academy, an innovative K-12 hybrid school whose mission was to provide a Global Education in a Local Community. A pioneer in the field of blended learning, PGA became a nationally recognized proof points school, with student outcomes and growth featured in case studies by the Christensen Institute, Evergreen Education, Fuel Ed, Forbes, and EdWeek.

Alex Magaña
Alex Magaña provides iLearn Collaborative with an experienced perspective on how to increase academic achievement in schools that serve high-poverty/ high-minority populations. In the nine years that Magaña has guided the leadership at Grant Beacon Middle School, the school has been nationally recognized for its innovative practices, and boasts one of the highest growth rates of all middle schools in Denver Public Schools. Due to the successful approach he's built with his team, he was given the opportunity to replicate the model and add an additional school. He is currently leading the expansion of The Network with a focus around the Four Pillars: Personalized Learning, Enrichment Programming, Character Development, and Critical Thinking.

Stephen Chang
Stephen brings an equity lens to iLearn Collaborative’s programs. Starting his education career with work as Head Counselor at a large economically and racially diverse high school in Berkeley California, Stephen currently serves as a consultant at the National Equity Project, where for over 8 years, he has worked to build culture, conditions, and competencies for excellence and equity in education. In this role, he has coached over 30 principals across 6 states, project managed two comprehensive multi-year high school redesigns and served as faculty for the principal preparation programs for New Leaders and KIPP. He has also served as an Assistant Principal in Denver Public Schools at the Denver Center for International Studies at Montbello.

Matt Samuelson
Matt Samuelson provides iLearn Collaborative with an education legislation and policy perspective. Currently the Director of Special Projects at the Donnell Kay Foundation, Matt was previously a journalist for eight years, worked for several natural resource and water organizations, and has worked in partnership with both the Building Excellent Schools Today program and the U.S. Green Building Council. Matt has a master's degree in public affairs from the University of Colorado Denver and a law degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. His work has focused on blended learning, school facilities, transportation and finance.

Graham Forman
Graham Forman ensures that iLearn Collaborative’s business strategy and program design can meet the rigor demanded by venture capitalists, supporting our sustainability efforts. He is the founder and managing director of Edovate Capital and has been an early-stage investor and entrepreneur since 2001. He is an avid angel investor and value investor, having managed his portfolio to critical mass and above market returns over the last 10 years. For the last decade and a half he led sales, marketing, and business development for three early-stage, high-growth SaaS businesses selling to the education market. Earlier in his career he was a legislative aide for former U.S. Senator Paul Simon and California State Assemblyman and Senator Jack Scott, who instilled in him a passion for education issues and developed his understanding of legislative and regulatory issues in education. Graham serves on the Board of the Colorado Education Initiative, and holds an MBA from UCLA Anderson and a BA from the University of Chicago.

Dwight D. Jones, Senior Vice President, Equity, Inclusion & Urban Markets
Dwight Jones serves as Senior Vice President of Equity, Inclusion & Urban Markets at McGraw-Hill Education. In this role, he works with leading national, regional and local associations and organizations to find new ways to partner together to address the needs of administrators, teachers and students in some of the largest and most academically diverse U.S. school districts. Having already overseen major education reform efforts as an administrator in similar districts and schools, Dwight is uniquely positioned to lead the company’s K-12 outreach efforts in major urban markets across the United States. Before joining McGraw-Hill Education, Dwight served as Discovery Communications’ Superintendent in Residence and provided strategic guidance and advice to the organization’s Education Division. Prior to that, he served as the superintendent of Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada, the nation’s fifth largest school district. During his tenure there, he initiated a school reform agenda designed to raise the academic bar and ensure all of the district’s 315,000 students were prepared for college, a career or the military. In this role, he also implemented graduation initiatives that promoted one of the largest increases in graduation rates among the nation’s largest school districts from 2011-2012. Prior to his time in Nevada, Dwight served as the Colorado Commissioner of Education, overseeing the education of more than 830,000 students across more than 1,700 schools in 178 public school districts. His efforts to revamp state standards, improve accountability and narrow achievement gaps, particularly those related to race and socioeconomic status, have been recognized by governors, legislators and colleagues across the state. He also oversaw the development of the Colorado Growth Model, which depicts the overall achievement of individual schools and districts to administrators, educators and the public and has since been implemented in more than 15 states. Dwight’s other past positions include: Superintendent at Fountain-Fort Carson School District Eight, Fountain, Colorado; Operational Vice President at Edison Learning, Knoxville, Tennessee; and Assistant Superintendent at Wichita Public Schools, Wichita, Kansas. Before taking on those roles, Dwight held several positions as an elementary, middle and high school principal and as an elementary and middle school teacher. Dwight has been recognized by numerous organizations throughout his career. He has been awarded the NAACP’s Heartbeat Award (2013), the Asian Chamber of Commerce Community Achievement Award (2013), Chairman’s Award of Excellence, Nevada Latin Chamber of Commerce (2012), Alumni Fellow for Kansas State University’s College of Education (2011), and Troops to Teachers Hall of Fame (2010). Dwight holds a B.S., K-12 Education, Fort Hays State University, and a M.Ed., Administration and Supervision, Kansas State University. A father of three, he and his wife reside in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
